Warfare in the Old Testament by Boyd Seevers

Warfare in the Old Testament helps bridge the gap between the modern reader and the world of the Old Testament by using textual and physical evidence to describe ancient military practices. Seevers paints a realistic picture of how Israel and the surrounding nations did battle, adding depth and impact to the relevant biblical accounts. Filled with illustrations, this full-color volume explores the archaeological evidence and early writings that shed light on biblical warfare between Israel and its neighbors: Egypt, Philistia, Assyria, Babylon, and Persia. Of special interest are Seevers’ treatments of the role that religion played in these ancient warfare practices. (From the Publisher’s Website)

“The great distance in location, time, culture, and language separating us from the original events and writings [of the Old Testament] often causes problems. Because our understanding and mindset differ greatly from those of the ancients, we can find it difficult to understand what God was saying and doing in their distant world. Learning about the ancient culture, including the practice of warfare, can help us better understand the biblical message.” (From the Introduction, page 21)

Mr. Seevers begins each chapter by drawing the reader in with a fictional story based on his research of the cultures featured. These cultures include: the Israelites, the Egyptians, the Philistines, the Assyrians, the Babylonians, and the Persians. As the subtitle suggests, each culture is analyzed in regards to its historical background, biblical interaction, organization, weapons, and tactics. This book is beautifully laid out with great illustrations to help the reader grasp the things being discussed. It is bound in a sturdy cover with durable pages, perfect for use as a textbook.

I found this book to be immediately useful in my day to day bible reading. The Psalms are full of military imagery that this book helps clarify and deepens my understanding of what those writers were referring to.  Dr. Seevers has helped bring to life cultures that have been buried in the dust for centuries. This has been one of my favorite books this year. As a student of the bible, history, and cultures; this book has been a gold-mine for me. Thank you Dr. Seevers and Kregel for publishing this outstanding resource.
