Biographies are useful in that they help us know the struggles and triumphs of people from different times and backgrounds. We soon realize that we are not alone in this fight called life. We of course know that God is with us. But we also find out that we are surrounded by a cloud of witnesses.

No time in history saw more upheaval than the Reformation. I have read scores of books on Luther and Calvin. But I had never read a book on Zwingli until I read William Boekestein’s offering in the Bitesize Biographies series by EP Books. In his book, Boekestein shows Zwingli to be a man committed to the church and to rightly dividing the Word of God. He was a man who longed to see a pure church. This he had in common with the other Reformers. But just like them, he discovered that reform would forever change the church as he knew it.

Boekestein skillfully shows the reader Zwingli’s strengths and weaknesses. As the book progresses, the reader also sees the sanctification and the struggles in Zwingli’s faith. Zwingli was a product of his time and Boekestein pulls back the veil to allow the reader to see this.

This Bitesized Biographies series is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. I have now read five of them and heartily recommend them. Though not exhaustive, they make for pleasant and at times exciting introduction to some of the men and women that God has used to shape and strengthen the church. Thank you EP Books and William Boekestein for this addition to this excellent series.
